Country park 11km circuit

30 March 2012

We don't just have a 10K route at Dams to Darnley Country Park, we go a few steps further with our 11 kilometre circuit.

Walking is an excellent form of exercise that can help you stay healthy, feel good, sleep better, relax and reduce stress. So what are you waiting for?

Many joggers also already use the country park's path network and enjoy the spectacular scenery. If you have never jogged or run before or have been inactive for a while it is best to start with a brisk walk and over time build up to a jog and then a run. It is important to have a good pair of running shoes that suit your feet so ask in a shop for advice. If you have any health concerns you should speak to your GP before hitting the road.

Most of the circular route covers surfaced paths, but there is also a short section along Aurs Road. This is a quiet public road but be aware that there is some traffic. You will also have to cross a few roads along the way.

There are a couple of ideal starting points but you can join the route wherever is best for you. One good starting point is the Ashoka Restaurant on Corselet Road, off Nitshill Road, Darnley. From here join the path network by going up Corselet Road for approximately 50 metres and enter Darnley Mill on your left. Continue staight on across the bridge over the Brock Burn and turn right. Where the path forks keep left and follow the fence line. Keep going until you come back onto Corselet Road and turn left. This is a quiet public road with no footpath. Follow the road, which rises gradually uphill through Waulkmill Glen woodland to the Barrhead dams

The route passes Waulkmill Glen and Littleton reservoirs, passing under the Victorian railway viaduct and onto Ryat Linn Reservoir. Contine straight ahead until you reach a T-junction beside the waterfall. Turn left and this will take you to Aurs Road. This is a very busy route so take extra care in crossing over the road before you join the path around Balgray Reservoir. After 2km turn right just before the car park and follow the path up the slope to the bridge over the railway line. Keep going until you read Springfield Road, Barrhead.

Carefully cross Springfield Road and turn right along Oak Bank Drive, this becomes Springfield Drive and then Aurs Road. Go down the hill past Barrhead High School. Turn right at the roundabout and go along Darnley Road past Cowan Park. Just before you reach the roundabout turn right onto the path which runs behind the Parklands Meadow estate. When you reach the fork next to the fenced off pond keep right. Stick to this main lower path until you reach Corselet Road again and then turn right. There is another path entrance into Darnley Mill just over 100m away on the left hand side of the road. Stick to this main path following the Brock Burn until you reach the T-junction and you are back at your starting point!
