Future plans

The future development of the country park rests upon improving access to and within Dams to Darnley, together with the establishment of visitor facilities.

As part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal a number of infrastructure improvement projects are being taken forward witin the country park. The first of these got underway in summer 2019 with improvements to Balgraystone Road, including a new path link from Springfield Road to the country park. The new link will connect to the existing path network at Balgray Reservoir and the country park car park.

Following on from Balgraystone Road, access improvements are focusing upon Aurs Road. Establishing safe access to and through the country park from Newton Mearns and Barrhead is a long standing priority. Proposals are currently being progressed to straighten Aurs Road in two locations. The works will include a new path link from Whitecraigs Rugby Club, a 650 metre long boardwalk overlooking Balgray Reservoir and improved links to Barrhead. The project will create a safe 2km pedestrian and cycle link and will also assist in the completion of a circular path around Balgray Reservoir. The realignment of Aurs Road will additionally create space for two new car parks. Detailed design work is currently underway, with the design of the active travel link supported by Sustrans Scotland.

In addition to identifying key access enhancements, including those detailed above, Country Park Supplementary Planning Guidance prepared by East Renfrewshire Council also outlines proposals to develop visitor facilities within Dams to Darnley. These include a cable wake park, visitor centre and environmental education base.

As plans progress firm timescales will be confirmed. It is hoped that country park visitors will begin to benefit from access improvements and new facilities within the next two or three years.
