Future plans

The future development of the country park rests upon improving access to and within Dams to Darnley, together with the establishment of visitor facilities.

Whilst access to the country park from Darnley and Barrhead have been improved over the last number of years with the addition of new paths and entrances, establishing safe access from Newton Mearns remains a key priority.

Initial plans focused upon a link from Whitecraigs Rugby Club to Balgray Reservoir, adjacent to the current alignment of Aurs Road. Given anticipated future funding, proposals are now being progressed to straighten Aurs Road in two locations. Plans for the realignment of Aurs Road, south east of Balgray Reservoir, are to include a new path link. It is hoped that this will finally create the much needed safe access from the south and west side of Newton Mearns to the Barrhead dams.

Linked proposals around the second road straightening project, together with a potential boardwalk, adjacent to the eastern shore of Balgray Reservoir, would also significantly improve access. These proposals would assist in the completion of a circular path around the reservoir and a safe link between Newton Mearns and Barrhead.

In addition to identifying key access enhancements, including those outlined above, Country Park Supplementary Planning Guidance prepared by East Renfrewshire Council in 2015 also outlines proposals to develop visitor facilities within Dams to Darnley. These include a cable wake park, visitor centre and environmental education base. Plans are initially being progressed associated with the wake park on the west shore of Balgray Reservoir.

Whilst plans are progressing, a firm timescale has still to be confirmed. It is hoped that country park visitors will begin to benefit from access improvements and new facilities within the next two or three years.
