How to get to the country park

A map showing existing paths within the country park area, as well as local entrance points, is available on the website or by contacting the countryside rangers

Walking and cycling

At present there are a number of entrances into the country park area.

From Nitshill Road (Darnley, Southpark Village and Glasgow)

In the north the main entrances to the country park at Darnley Mill are from Nitshill Road and Corselet Road (off Nitshill Road at the Ashoka Restaurant). There are also smaller entrances from Waulkglen Road, via a long flight of steps, Waulkglen Drive and Foxglove Place from Southpark Village into Darnley Mill.

From Parkhouse Road (Nitshill and Barrhead)

The path network next to the Parklands Meadow estate, with entrances off Parkhouse Road and from within the estate, links into Corselet Road and the Barrhead dams.

From Barrhead

From Springfield Road there is an entrance to the country park and the path around the south side of Balgray Reservoir. There is also an entrance to the Balgray Reservoir path on Balgraystone Road, the country road opposite the entrance to St. Luke’s High School, Barrhead. The Balgray Reservoir path in turn leads across Aurs Road to the spinal path through the country park. Aurs Road is a busy road between Newton Mearns and Barrhead so great care needs to be taken in crossing at this point.

Aurs Road provides access on cycle to the Barrhead dams from Barrhead, including the Balgray Reservoir path and the spinal path. It should be noted that there is no footpath towards the Barrhead dams beyond Springfield Road, Barrhead.

From Newton Mearns

Walking access from Newton Mearns to the country park remains to be progressed. Aurs Road provides access on cycle to the Barrhead dams from Newton Mearns, including the Balgray Reservoir path and spinal path. It should be noted that Aurs Road is a busy and narrow public road and that there is no footpath towards the Barrhead dams beyond Whitecraigs Rugby Club.

A number of bus services go along or near Nitshill Road, mostly from or via Glasgow city centre, and stop close to the northern entrance of the country park at Corselet Road. Locations closest to the country park are shown in bold. The most frequent services are:

Car

From Barrhead and Newton Mearns the main country park car park is off Balgraystone Road, the country road opposite Springfield Road at St. Luke's High School, Barrhead. The car park is next to the start of the Balgray Reservoir path.

Parking along Aurs Road is very restricted, with only a small number of lay by spaces. Visitors are reminded to observe 'keep clear' signs on gates as 24 hour access is required.

Access to the country park at Darnley Mill is from Nitshill Road at Corselet Road, next to the World Buffet restaurant (formerly the Ashoka). The World Buffet management are happy for country park visitors to use their car park. Corselet Road is not a through road and there is no public vehicular access to the Barrhead dams.
