Open water

The open water of the Barrhead dams makes up about one sixth of the country park. The dams are of high ornithological interest, especially Balgray and Waulkmill Glen reservoirs.

Balgray Reservoir

Balgray Reservoir, to the south of Auchenback in Barrhead, is the largest body of open water within the country park, it is also a birdwatcher’s paradise.

The path around the southern side of Balgray Reservoir provides a great location to stop and take in the comings and goings in terms of birdlife that mark the changing seasons at Balgray Reservoir.

The importance of standing open water is emphasised by the fact that both the East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde LBAP and the Glasgow LBAP highlight it as a priority habitat. More information on what is being done to protect and enhance open water can be found in each document.
