History within the country park
The country park and its surrounding area have a rich and varied history. From the farming landscape, that is likely to date back to medieval times, to the second world war Patterton prisoner of war camp, over four hundred years of history can be documented within the area. In particular the story of the Darnley bleachfields helped to shape the industrial landscape of the west of Scotland and beyond.
In 2008 a cultural and built heritage inventory of the area was completed by Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD). The work drew out ten historical themes associated with the country park.
